About CMCC

The Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC) is a research center on climate science and policy. Its mission is to investigate and model our climate system and its interactions with society to provide reliable, rigorous, and timely scientific results to stimulate sustainable growth, protect the environment and develop science driven adaptation and mitigation policies in a changing climate. It also aims to develop foresights and quantitative analysis of our future planet and society.

CMCC was established in 2005 with the financial support of the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research, and the Ministry of the Environment, Land and Sea and it has been fully operative since 2006. On December 10, 2015 the Center became a Foundation, therefore, representing CMCC’s legal status, its contents, aims and operational modalities.

CMCC benefits from the extensive applied research experience of its members and institutional partners, namely National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, University of Salento, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, University of Sassari, University of Tuscia, Politecnico di Milano, Resources for the Future, University of Bologna.

Among its institutes and centers of excellence, CMCC established the Advanced Training and Education Center in 2024. It is within the framework of the Center that the FERS School is offered. The Center operates with a fourfold mission. The FERS School contributes to achieving one of these objectives. It promotes knowledge exchange and education to the next generation of researchers and young professionals on advanced methods, themes, and urgent priorities within the climate change and sustainability research agenda.

The Center also fosters global peer-to-peer knowledge sharing and advanced studies in climate science, creating platforms for collaboration across countries. In addition, the Center supports public authorities and the private sector at both the European and national levels by providing specialized training on the science-policy interface, including climate change governance and policy implementation. Lastly, it is committed to accelerating climate innovation in the Global South through capacity-building initiatives that support the design and scaling of promising solutions for effective, long-term climate adaptation and sustainable development. The empowerment of communities most affected by climate change involves equipping them with the tools and expertise necessary to build resilience and promote sustainable growth.
